Six Flags Goes Green

Six Flags Amusement Parks

With summer upon us, many are thinking of fun in the sun and the thrills of flying through the air on a roller coaster joyride. Six Flags, a company that operates 20 theme parks in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, is apparently not only thinking of fun, but of the environment as well.

The amusement park giant announced new initiatives to ‘go green’ and minimize the impact of waste and pollution on the environment.

While we don’t want to impute ulterior motives, many wonder if it might be part of a plan to save money. After all, it hasn’t been all fun and games for the company that just filed for bankruptcy and is struggling with a burdensome debt load.

The company’s green roster includes the following eco-friendly lineup:

  • Six Flags plans to use used vegetable oil from its food production to run all vehicles and trains that are presently running on diesel fuel.
  • They are switching over to LED lighting to cut energy consumption.
  • The company has partnered with Coca-Cola to add another 3,000 recycling bins to its parks as well as increasing paper recycling programs.
  • They are also implementing methods to conserve water, including new low-flow water fixtures, as well as using plants and groundcover that grow well with less watering.
  • As well, the company is looking at the option of using solar energy to power some of its park’s roller coasters and buildings.

These green initiatives are likely to aid the company financially while at the same time improving their socially responsible image. Who knows, business may soar as high as the roller coasters when green-minded fun-seekers get wind of the changes and line up for a ride!
