Daily happenings around the GreenSphere (People, Companies & Communities):

Global Action: This past Saturday marked the International Day of Climate Action which included 5,248 rallies from 181 countries across the globe. Organizers claim that it was the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history. All the events centered on the number 350 (as in parts per million), which scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

“In some sense, the global warming movement finally went global yesterday,” said 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben. “And there wasn’t a rock star or movie actor in sight—it was ordinary people rallying around a scientific data point to send the message that our leaders actually need to lead.”

Race to the Finish: The Global Green Challenge, one of the toughest endurance races for solar and hybrid cars, has started in Australia. Competitors must travel over 3,000 km in some of the country’s harshest terrain including the tropical climate in Darwin to southern Adelaide. After the first day of racing, the current front-runners are a team from Japan. The aim of the race is to raise awareness of advances in solar, hybrid, electric and low emission vehicles.

LEED Updates: Canada’s Green Building Council is planning on releasing an updated version of its LEED rating system for new construction and renovations. There will still be five categories where credits are awarded: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. However, improvements are planned in the areas of applications, reference guides, credit weightings and certification.

The Autogreen Challenge: After searching for months, the CAA of South Central Ontario has discovered the most environmentally friendly driver in Ontario. Anna Ross, a resident of Creemore, Ontario, was able to rise to the challenge in every aspect – winning the grand prize of a 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. CAA challenged the public to discover more about fuel efficient vehicles while learning about and taking advantage of green servicing options, changing driving habits and speaking up to tell the government the importance of eco-driving.
