Dells Solar Trees

Dell has planted solar photovoltaic parking lot structures at their headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, an initiative that’s part of their long-standing commitment to sustainability.

The system of 11 solar trees transforms an otherwise heat-absorbing, black pavement parking lot into a solar grove that is estimated to produce approximately 131,000 kW of clean solar power for their corporate building, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 145,000 pounds per year.

The 516 individual solar photovoltaic modules will also provide shade to over 50 parking spaces in the employee parking lot and will incorporate two Envision Solar charging stations for electric vehicles.

Developed by Envision Solar International Inc., an industry leader in solar integrated building systems, the solar trees were designed to be aesthetically pleasing (as far as solar trees go) and were specifically placed so as to be prominently visible to passing highway drivers, serving as unmistakable ‘symbols of Dell’s environmental stewardship’ and as a beacon of sustainability to other corporations. A few more real trees would have been nice too; thankfully, none were chopped down to make room for the solar type.
