The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

With a vested interest in the earth, The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has decided that, for the first time in its 87 year history, it will be fully ‘green’. At least, the energy required to run the ten-day event will be.

Direct Energy Business, a large energy supplier for commercial and industrial customers, has purchased Renewable Energy Credits from low-impact hydroelectric generation facilities based in Ontario to offset the carbon footprint of the power needed to operate The Royal.

The green initiative is just in time, as The Royal welcomes Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles, a long-time champion of the environment, to officially open the 2009 event.

The Royal hopes to be an example to others in the industry, prompting them to show greater environmental consciousness. Since it’s opening in 1922, the fair has become the world’s largest indoor agricultural and international equestrian competition. It runs from November 6 to 15 at Exhibition Place, Toronto, and draws 300,000 visitors to the city annually.
