If you’re a GTA (Greater Toronto Area) homeowner, you may be able to benefit from The Backyard Tree Planting Program provided by LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping improve city life, “one tree at a time”.
The benefits of having a few of these stalwarts of nature in your own backyard are numerous. Trees planted around your home can reduce heating and cooling costs by providing shade in summer and protection from cold winds in winter. Trees are excellent at carbon sequestration, provide clean air to breathe, and support biodiversity by providing a habitat for birds, etc.
On a more homey note, trees provide natural privacy and increase property value by adding natural beauty.
The LEAF program is subsidized, meaning you’ll only have to pay about half of the full cost of the service. For about $100 to $190 per tree, you’ll receive a 30-minute yard consultation with a certified arborist to help you make educated decisions about what type of tree suits your property and where it should be planted, a six to eight foot tall tree and full planting service.
With the help of The Backyard Tree Program, you’ll be able to enjoy trees in your own backyard that will survive and thrive for years, adding to the urban canopy of ‘green’ for decades to come.

This is a wonderful program! I sincerely hope that homeowners in the Greater Toronto Area take full advantage of this opportunity. Trees beautify and sustain our world. I can easily list 100+ benefits to planting trees and have listed a few of those on my own website. Personally, I love trees most for their beauty and the wildlife habitats they provide. Having said that, if you are interested in the economical advantages, I would point out that the increase in property value and the reduction of heating and cooling costs, make this a viable investment for any homeowner. Coupled with the fact that you receive a substantial discount and a free consultation with an expert, to me this is a “no brainer”. Happy planting everyone!

Leaf also has tree tenders training sessions designed for individuals who want to gain tree-related knowledge and skills. The sessions include how trees work, tree planting and tree care.
It sounds great for anyone interested in trees!
