Green Apple School Program

Metro Inc., a grocery chain which now has over 300 stores across Ontario and Quebec, has launched an environmental initiative to give a ‘green’ glow to its reputation. And they’ve chosen to target what’s most precious and will therefore result in the most salient boost to their public image.

The Green Apple School Program is to run until spring of 2010 and will give out $1000 grants to elementary and secondary schools in Ontario and Quebec who come up with projects that will improve their school’s sustainability and cut its carbon footprint.

One million dollars per province will be invested, according to Metro, and ideas can be varied and innovative and should not be limited to things like tree-planting. Of course, only entries that are deemed eligible will be rewarded and they are subject to a first-come, first-served basis. So, early entries have the best chance of success.

Ideas can be hatched by anyone affiliated with a school, but must be approved by the school principal. Apparently, as projects get approved, they will be posted on the website, www.greenapplegrants.ca. You can also submit your green ideas via this site and see if your school can cash in on the ‘green’ grants offered by Metro, serving up more than just groceries for dinner.
