Canada Games 2009

The 2009 Canada Games are being held August 15-29 on beautiful Prince Edward Island.

The national multisport and cultural event has grown to be the apex of Canadian athletic competition. The event also promises to be eco-friendly, with definite strategies put in place to win a ‘green’ medal.

Organizers of the games are aiming to minimize the impact of waste produced by large crowds by recycling. Even athletes are expected to educate themselves and follow the 5-option waste sorting system: compost, paper recyclables, non-paper recyclables, refundables, and garbage.

New facilities and venues had to pass environmental assessments to receive funding. Lawn care is being accomplished through the use of organic products, and food utensils are biodegradable.

Jac Gautreau, the producer of the opening ceremonies, revealed that even these festivities would be as green as possible. The majority of the set materials are from the ‘reused’ category – items even being taken from the trash.

The 2009 Canada Games are not just “inspiring dreams and building champions” in the world of sports, they are also going for gold in the ‘world of green.’
