Great Backyard Bird Count

This weekend get your family and friends to participate in the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count has identified over 600 species of birds in the past and participants have sent in thousands of bird photographs from around the continent.

It’s easy to participate. It can take as little as 15 minutes and you can count one day, two days or all four days of the event. For details on how you can take part, visit www.birdcount.org. You can also explore maps, view photos and see live statistics as they come in.

Why count birds?

Your participation in the bird count will assist scientists and bird enthusiasts to document valuable information. They learn much by knowing where the birds are. Bird populations are constantly changing so it takes all of us to document the complex distribution and movements of so many species found throughout North America. So, this weekend head outside and count yourself in!
