Getting from A to B is a major cause of the pollution plaguing Canadians, and the world. The daily commute sees our carbon footprint ground deeper and deeper into the greasy pavement. And this doesn’t take into account the toll on people’s health as they deprive themselves of exercise while sitting in a car, facing mounting frustration as they deal with traffic congestion and impolite motorists. On top of all this, there’s the economic burden of running a vehicle and the circles we go in looking for parking.
Giving up on the automobile yet? Have you abandoned your car on the side of the road and started walking? A machine invented as far back as the 1800’s is a perfect alternative.
Thousands of Canadians already commute via two wheels, no motor. The bicycle is really a boon to the environment and individual health as well. It’s an invention so efficient, simple and beneficial it can’t be argued against; yet, by thousands of others, it’s taken so for granted that it sits in their yard creating rust.
If the motivation is lacking to jump on and take a ride, consider the far reaching benefits of owning, and using, a bicycle.
Pollution Free Travel
First, besides walking or jogging, what other form of transportation is emission free? Using a bike means creating no carbon footprint. You can feel good as you get around, knowing you are contributing to cleaner air. Also, the cost of fuel doesn’t bother you as much when your own feet do the pushing. And that leads us to another benefit. Exercise!
Health Benefits
While, at first, longer distances may leave your legs sore, biking is an excellent stamina builder. You’ll soon be able to go anywhere you choose without running out of energy or breath. In fact, governments realize that by promoting cycling they could reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
With a comfy backpack or bike trailer, you can even run errands such as getting the groceries. Chances are you’ll be able to park right outside the entrance door, for free of course. This will save you time by avoiding long walks from the far corners of parking lots or from having to settle on that spot three blocks away. Still not enough time? Many are finding that, with the exercise they get cycling, they don’t need scheduled gym time. And you may discover that cycling can actually get you places faster than a car by avoiding traffic jams.
We’ve mentioned the physical benefits of cycling, but not to be overlooked is the impact on mental performance and wellbeing. Starting your day off with exercise improves energy and productivity all day long. And if you’ve had a hard day at the office, a relaxing bike ride home can help you arrive feeling refreshed instead of angry or frustrated, something traffic congestion can’t do. Overall, biking can contribute to a higher ‘happiness’ level.
Another form of pollution that cycling cuts back on is noise pollution. If more and more people use bicycles, the sounds of nature, such as birds, may become increasingly easier to hear, contributing to a sense of peace.
Be Safe
Of course, a bicycle commute is only a success if it’s a safe commute. So practice safe cycling. Always protect your head – wear a helmet! Keep your bike tuned up and follow traffic laws. Never be an impatient or aggressive cyclist.
Cycling may not be possible for all, due to physical limitations or distances involved. In most Canadian climates, the weather may interfere during some months, although many have become year round cyclists.
However, if we all do what we can to get from A to B on a machine that we power ourselves, bicycles could help us pedal into a cleaner environment. In fact, they may just be the most efficient form of transportation ever invented! What better way is there to get to a greener future?
