It’s that time of year again, Garden Season! Implement these easy, energy-saving ideas when caring for your lawn and garden and see how high the roses grow!
1. Push It
Cut your grass with an electric or, better yet, a push lawn mower. A regular gas lawn mower used for one growing season can produce air pollution equivalent to driving a new car 550km. Using an electric mower means much less pollution. Using a push mower means none. Plus, it’ll help you get a healthy workout – so give it a try!
2. Use a Smart Sprinkler
For a garden grower, proper irrigation is a must. Instead of using sprinklers that leave most water on the upper foliage of plants, use directional sprinklers that can target lower, root areas. The addition of a timer to control water usage makes for a smart sprinkler system.
3. Get a Soaker
Water conservation is a big part of greener living. We also appreciate a nice green lawn. Introducing the soaker hose. With a regular sprinkler you could be using water in one hour equivalent to a whole family’s day usage. But because a soaker hose allows water to seep out of tiny holes right onto the parched earth, you can use up to 70% less water.
4. Brighten Up
Light up with solar or LED garden lights. We all know incandescent lights are energy guzzlers, meaning you also lose money by using them. Solar garden lights can bring beauty to your space while powering themselves with sunlight. And LED lights use only minimal electricity and can last up to 100 000 hours.
5. Fertilize Naturally
Chemical fertilizers can leach into water supplies and affect your health and that of your neighbors. They also kill helpful insects and wildlife. An organic fertilizer is a much healthier choice. Use one that releases slowly and help it out by adding your own compost.
